When you mix generic Ah! Megami Sama and Lucky Star you came across this “Kannagi”. As you might predicted, it’s a bout a boy who meet with a goddess. Although unlike Belldandy this one is pretty powerless. With a bit of anime otaku joke here and there I found it quite entertaining.
Mikuriya Jin is just an average junior highschooler who have interest in art. Since he was a kid, he likes to play on a shrine in that city and one day he met a mysterious lady. But now after years has passed, the city decide to move the shrine and chop off the tree where they believe the deity reside. One of Jin friend brought a piece (a huge trunk to be precise though) for Jin, and he decided to make a statue which resembles the mysterious lady and as a memento of the shrine. But just after it’s done, when Jin about to transport it to school, just after it touch the soil, the trunk got possessed by the goddess and a girl with a short skirt (and flat chest XD) pop out from the wooden statue. She introduce herself as Nagi, the deity that also a “mother” of this land. And few silly accidents happen as Jin trying to cover Nagi identity, helping her against “impurities” and supply her neccesity (such as *cough*underwear*cough*).
Jin who lives alone don’t have problem to let her stay, but problem occur when his childhood friend Tsugumi Aoba knew about her existence. Tsugumi is a Anee-san (Big Sister) childhood friend type, and Jin has been entrusted to her by his father, so she felt responsible for taking care of him. Although she didn’t admit it, she definitely had a crush on Jin, It’s kinda obvious. With some (unconvincing) lie they manage to get Tsugumi understood that she can’t live anywhere else and finally accept it.
More problem (or fun from audience perspective) arise when other characters start to be introduced. As a student, Jin obviously have to school and no matter how he try to kept her in the house she somehow manage to sneak into school, and meet his friends from the art club. Daitetsu Hibiki is the guy who give him the trunk, he’s also Jin good friend. He is a big timid guy (kinda like Chad in Bleach) and Jin has admired him for he is actually have multitalent despite his look. Also Meguru Akiba, a self-conscious anime otaku, despite that he dedicated himself to making manga and although he look more of the stylish guy type. And there are also his seniors, Shino Ookuchi and Takako Kimura, these two girls adding up charade to the bunch of groups. Takako is… obviously a potential Fujyoshi type XD , she is one of those nosy senpai type while Shino is the type of cool mature girl. Other problematic encounter is Zange, Nagi “rival” goddess who also attracted to jin.
The romance beetwen them run very slow at the beginning (well their ro mance barely even there in the anime series) although other love rival already targeting Mikuriya. Back to real world, this series manga has a suprising development in the middle of the show that, you can say, dissapoint some fans (mostly her most fanatic fan, seriously people, get some life~ or at least some logic~). Though it’s not the major series type I still enjoy it. In the end I hope they would continue the anime or at least OVAs.
